Be it death by war or to the streets, losing a loved one to violence is painful beyond what most of us will ever feel. I have witnessed this pain in person on too many occasions. I am struck by how similar the pain is no matter the circumstances of the violent death. If the lost one is a US soldier, an Iraqi or a regular person from the neighborhood. The pain is still the same. The death is still a nightmare. Why? Because it did not have to happen. It is human made. It is a crime we perpetrate against each other.
